ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF SOUND

Illinois Department of Sound is an improvised music project in central Illinois. Influenced by equal parts Ennio Morricone and Robert Fripp, IDoS explores the outer limits of sonic space in a variety of modes.

The dreamy, psych-influenced meandering gives way to the adrenaline-fueled sonic funnel clouds the duo creates, pulling you out of dreamtime and back into the world of high-powered, joyful acoustics. IDoS seeks collaborations and joint projects with other creative people and organizations to explore the sonic and visual possibilities of improvised art.

Video specifically, and time-based art in general, is an important part of the IDoS process. Joe Wallace has been directing, shooting, and editing music videos since 1995 when he began with the collective Crevice, his own solo projects Paisley Babylon, and eventually Thelema USA, Infinity Asylum, Hyperbubble, Crevice, and Illinois Department of Sound.

He also produced music videos as part of the Ronnie James Disco team in 2023. His work has been featured in galleries from San Antonio, Texas to Chicago, Illinois. The video work of Illinois Department of Sound is shot and directed by Joe Wallace and markobarloco, and includes the short film, The Berlin Trilogy, which is a collection of time-based art based on the sonic landscapes of IDoS.

Joe Wallace and markobarloco actively seek collaborations with performing artists and visual artists alike. There is no collision of artistic cultures too strange or surreal for IDoS, and collaboration proposals are always welcome. Message us: Illinois.Department.Sound@gmail dot.com
